County U16 Hockey t'ment

Yarm started the first match of the tournament against the hosts: Egglescliffe. This was a match in which we took a while to warm up and get going, but we managed to hold them off to a 0-0 draw, despite their tight pressure on our D. Next we were up against the eventual winners : Teesside High. We knew this would be a challenging match as they had certain key players which we knew would threaten our back half. This game was a huge improvement for us and we gave a strong performance by passing the ball very efficiently. We had some close shaves at both ends but had the better of the chances but the game finished 0-0 again. After counting up the scores, we knew we had to win our last match against Macmillan Academy to be in with a chance of progressing further in the competition. Macmillan, however had been tricky opponents in the past for us. The game started well with the girls played with confidence. We gained an early lead from a beautiful cross to Sophia Hall, who hit the back of the net gaining us a much needed goal. All we had to do now was to not concede in the last 7 minutes. At this point the girls seemed to find another gear in which everyone of us played as a team to deny Macmillan the goal. When the final whistle went we knew we had done enough to get through. After the final match of the day, we were joint 1st on points, but gained 2nd place due to goal difference. This meant we are now through to the North East Finals in November. Many thanks to Miss Redhead-Sweeney and Mr Skirving for giving us the crucial coaching we needed and to Egglescliffe for hosting the competition. Well done to the whole team who were actually U15's except one player, on getting through! This team will now progress to play in either Leeds or Pocklington in the regional finals.
