Yarm School Girls-U15A vs  Re-arranged N E Finals
On: Tuesday, 28 Nov 2017
Venue: Away

The U15's gave a good performance throughout the day and were in with shout of qualifying for the North finals. In the first game they drew against a super team from Wakefield High who in the end ran away with the top spot out of 5 schools. We defended brilliantly with Olivia Barber continuing her good form at the back. Ellie Vayro new to GK this year stepped up and was excellent in goal. She seemed to enjoy the challenge and matched the opposition with whatever they threw at her. At the final whistle it was 0-0 and we saw this as a positive result. The second game was Barnard Castle saw us step up after a good start from Barney. Their early pressure and short corner was dealt with and we then took the game to Barney with Lucy H, Katie Dent and Evie T enjoying a lot of possession in midfield. We rotated our forwards and tried to always have fresh legs on the pitch up high. Bella Ruck, Sophia Hall and Kaia worked hard alongside Amelia Robson who was selected after her good performance at Ashville. Evie drove beautifully beating numerous players and placed the ball bottom corner to give the team their first goal. In the third game we faced RGS Newcastle and we knew another good result would be a draw. This was our game plan from the start and it worked for most of the game. The girls had to work very hard indeed and didn't have a lot of possession and sat deep trying to contain their very good players. RGS eventually broke us down with a goal in the last 3 minutes which meant we had to take the game to them. The girls did just that and made a couple of chances with the clock running down. Evie went on another mazey run and sent the ball into the D and Sophia lunged to get a nick. This was close as the ball went in and we started to celebrate but rightly so the umpire deemed their wasn't a touch so the goal could not stand. The girls fourth game of the day was played v Hymers and we knew a win by more than one goal would be enough to see us through to the North finals as RGS had drawn v Barney. We created so many chances with 3 short corners but didn't get the ball on target. Second half was one way traffic for us and Eve Pallister playing high on the right made some great contributions. The ball was in the Hymer's half for the 12 minutes and finally at a short corner Lucy scored the follow up. Sophia had a couple of chances but their GK made some decent saves. Bella had a good chance to put the ball wide and if one of these had gone in the girls would have finished second place clear from RGS. When the final whistle went a quick check on the rules suggested even with the same points, same goal difference we couldn't progress as RGS beat us on the head to head. Disappointing after such a good day of hockey and the girls couldn't have given anymore. They were excellent and as this was an U16 competition and the majority will have next year once again to try and make the North finals.

Well done to the whole squad on a top day of hockey.

Won 2, drew 1 and lost 1.

PoT- Evie Thompson who really puts everything into every minute of the game despite being ill.
