Daily Mail RBS Vase Winners

Yarm School U-18’s Rugby team took home the Daily Mail RBS Vase with a 17-15 come-from-behind victory over Felsted College, in an exhilarating final at Twickenham.

The team has ended this season on a massive high by winning the trophy for the first time in the school’s history, having eclipsed the U-15s team of 2001, who exited at the semi-final stage.

Stuart Hardy, Yarm School’s Head Rugby Coach, praised the efforts of the team and believes the landmark victory is something that the pupils and the school community can be proud of.

Mr Hardy said: “I am absolutely delighted and proud of the efforts of the team. They battled for the full 70 minutes, showing great character, determination and fight to take home the Vase.

“The way in which we won shows a lot about this team. Having battled back constantly throughout the game is a credit to the boys and they thoroughly deserved their day out at Twickenham, making it an occasion not to forget.”

Having gone 10-0 down, a try from Newcastle Falcons bound, Zach Kibirige reduced the deficit by half and Yarm went into the interval trailing 10-5. Yarm tied things up with arguably the best try of the final, when Captain Josh Jones broke off the back of the scrum to release Conor Hartigan, who went over the line to score.

Felsted must have thought they had done enough to take the Vase, when they scored their third and final try to take the lead at 15-10, only for their hopes to be dashed emphatically.

Yarm’s ‘never say never’ attitude, took them across the line for their third score of the afternoon, when Will Guthrie went seemingly untouched across the try line and he duly converted the score gifting Yarm the trophy 17-15 and creating School history.

Mr Hardy added: “This magnificent achievement and it will go down in the school’s history books. It was a fantastic occasion and we would like to thank everyone who showed their support throughout the season and for those who braved the weather to witness the Twickenham spectacle.”
